Irritable bowel syndrome/IBS/Colitis

Irritable bowel syndrome is a problem related to the functions of the gastric track. IBS is not a disease in which gastro-intestinal track gets damaged, but rather it is a condition that is characterized by the group of symptoms related to functional disorders occurring together.

Most common symptoms of IBS:
1-     Pain-Pain in any part of abdomen or sensation of discomfort. Many times person suffering from it feels like cramping.
2-     Diarrhea, constipation, or both alternating each-other.
3-     Stools watery in the beginning followed by lumpy stools with mucus.
4-     Sensation as if intestines are not empty after passing stool.
5-     Sensation of heaviness, fullness, gas in abdomen.

It is commonly known as colitis. The reason related to IBS can be either physical or psychological. If a person suffers from abdominal discomfort or pain 3 or more times a month since the period of last three months, associated with mucous stools, IBS could be suspected.

Common causes of IBS:
1-     Sensitive bowels: Movement of intestines and entire gastrointestinal track is controlled by nerves coming out of brain. Any hypersensitivity of that nerve can lead to problems similar to IBS. Thus any food eaten may produce IBS like symptoms in this case.
2-     Anxiety disorders, panic disorders, stress, psychological disturbances etc. are the major causative factors for IBS.
3-     Any infection from bacteria or virus can lead to symptoms similar to IBS.
4-     Food allergies can produce the similar set of symptoms.
5-     Certain hormones and chemicals of body can produce gastric disturbances similar to IBS.
6-     I few cases, it could be related to genetics, running under the generations.

Diet during IBS:
Avoid eating large meals at a time. Better is to eat frequently but less at a time.
Avoid foods that contain large amount of fats and carbohydrates.
Food that commonly produce IBS like symptoms in persons with sensitive digestive system:
·         Fatty foods
·         Alcohol
·         Coffee
·         Dairy products and milk
·         Artificial sugar/sweeteners
·         Green leafy vegetables like cabbage, beans etc.
